Almond Milk DIY

If you’ve seen my post about about making your own DIY Oat Milk (find it here) then you know that I love to make my own milk because it is quick, easy, budget friendly and reduces waste. All of which are super important to me! I love to make oat milk because it is the most inexpensive form of plant based milks for me to make at home because I am able to buy oats in bulk at a great price. I usually only have to buy oats once a year and sometime they last me even longer! Also oat milk doesn’t require any prep so it’s my go to when I need milk in a pinch.

Another plant based milk that I make is almond milk. I make it multiple times a week! (Sometimes daily.) Almond milk is currently my favorite, but it does take a little bit longer because you have to let the almonds soak for at least 8 hours. If you can remember to do that ahead of time then this is another super quick and easy recipe!

Almonds can also be bought in bulk which can save money and of course reduce packaging waste. I like to take my reusable cloth bags to the bulk bins and stock up on a bunch of almonds at once. This way I always have some on hand since we go through A LOT of plant based milks in our house. (We make a large smoothie 1-2 times a day in the warmer months and every few days in the colder months.)

The Cost Breakdown

I’ve decided to breakdown the cost using the prices at our local store. Prices will vary by location, but this should be a good estimate of the savings you will see by making your own.

1 pound = 4 cups
1 pound = $9.00
1/2 cup per batch = 8 batches per pound
Total = $1.13 per batch

In the evening I will usually pour some almonds into a mason jar and top it with filtered water so that in the morning I am good to go! This works best for me because after I finish making our almond milk I can make our morning smoothie without having to wash the blender. #timesavingmomhacks

Another reason I love to make my own plant based milks at home is knowing whats in them. Store bought milks have a lot of added sugar and chemicals that you can avoid by making it yourself. It only takes a few minutes to make and clean up so I find it to be worth it all around.

Full disclosure: There are a few occasions when I will buy store bought chocolate almond milk as a sweet treat! #imnotperfect


1/3 cup almonds
4 cups filtered water (plus a little extra for soaking)
a pinch of salt
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
a pinch of cinnamon (optional)

-Soak almonds in filtered water for 8 hours
-Strain almonds and place in blender with the rest of the ingredients
-Blend thoroughly
-Strain thoroughly using a nut milk bag or strainer.
-Pour into and air tight container and refrigerate.

Milk will separate in between uses. Shake before using.

If you like a creamier milk you can add more almonds. I’ve used as little as 1/4 cup of almonds for a batch and as much as 1 cup.
