What Lilly is reading..

“Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty. It should be offered as a gift.”

Kate DiCamillo

In this post I am sharing with you some of Lilly’s favorite books. These are books we have enjoyed reading to her since she was just a fresh little newborn and still enjoy now at over a year old! She loves these books the most and will carry them over to us to read all day long (and often at night when she is supposed to be sleeping). I hope you find some inspiration here, and let me know in the comments what your child is reading!

Pout Pout Fish and Love Monster

These two books are super sentimental to me. We were gifted these for Lilly’s baby shower and they ended up being some of the first books we read to her. We started reading to Lilly as a newborn and I remember reading these over and over again while she watched with her big curious eyes. We still love these books, but we don’t read them as often now that our book collection has grown so much.

The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen is a fun book about a fish that thinks he can’t be happy. He swims along and meets a bunch of other ocean creatures. Eventually he learns to turn his frown into kisses. It has a reoccurring sign song-y rhyme that makes it really fun to read. There are also other books starring Pout Pout Fish available.

The Love Monster by Rachel Bright is probably my favorite children’s book. I find the little monster so endearing. He spends the whole book looking all over for someone like him, convinced there’s no one that will love a monster. Then, when he least expects it, as he is about to give up hope, he finds love! This book has the sweetest pictures and is just silly enough. The love monster also has a few other books out now starring him.

Little Owl’s Night

Little Owl’s Night by Divya Srinivasan is another book that we read to her nearly every night in the early days. This book is so sweet! The pictures are adorable and it has a beautiful narrative of Little Owl exploring the night forest. He meets all kinds of friends before returning back home in the morning when he gets sleepy. This is another book that has a bunch of spin offs.

Never Touch A..

These silly books are part of a big collection of sensory books by Make Believe Ideas, Ltd. The Never touch a series has so many to choose from. The pages of these books are thick which make it easy for babies to flip. Never Touch A Spider is actually the first book Lilly learned to flip through on her own. Each page has a different texture that makes the books interactive and engaging. We find that Lilly doesn’t stay on one page very long so these are perfect because each page has a short silly rhyme. We love to do funny voices for these books, because the characters are cute and quirky!

Slumberkins

I personally love the Slumberkins books so much! I think Lilly will get more enjoyment out of them as she get older, but right now she prefers interactive pages. These books each have a character that teach children how to work through a different emotion. You can buy the accompanying stuffed friend to go with them. They have the most beautiful artwork and come with an affirmation card. I love that they teach important coping skills for all different emotional situations. Some even have a meditation in the back for children to follow along with.

Mrs. Peanuckle’s ABC’s..

Mrs. Peanuckle’s Alphabet books are my favorite alphabet books! They have the most beautiful and fun illustrations! I love that they are very informative while still silly enough to hold the attention of a little one. I really enjoy the nature theme throughout them. Lilly is very into outdoors so I have a feeling she is going to enjoy these even more as she gets older!

Peek a Flap..

These Peek-a-Flap Board Book by Jaye Garnett and Babies in the Forest Chunky Lift-a-Flap by Ginger Swift are so good for practicing those fine motor skills! Lilly loves opening up the flaps and pointing to all the animals to learn the names. The Peek-a-Flap books are part of a big series too! I love how thick the pages are so Lilly doesn’t rip them and it’s also easier for her to flip the pages on her own. The artwork throughout them is beautiful and realistic and features facts about the animals.

Misc..

These are some of the books Lilly grabs at least once a day. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a classic that I’m sure every child has in their library! Lilly love that the pages are all different sizes as the caterpillar eats his way through the book. I think she will enjoy this especially as she learns her numbers. P is for Puppy is a great sensory book, because each page has a different dog with fur. Lilly is obsessed with dogs right now and will chase after them anytime she sees one. It’s easy to see why this one is a favorite! First 100 Animals by Roger Priddy is one she loves right now because she is so eager to learn and communicate! She loves to point to all the animals and try to repeat the words. This book is great for that, because the photos are of real animals, although I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a budgerigar until now!

Just for fun!

To wrap it up, I had to include these hilariously adorable books about personal hygiene! Toot by Leslie Patricelli is a cute book all about “tooting” that makes us laugh every time we read it. Proud to Potty, Brush Up, and Tubbie Time were gifted to us as a set and the silly rhymes had us cracking up as we read them to her for the first time! I’m a huge fan of silly books, because I think it makes reading more enjoyable. I want Lilly to have a love of books that lasts her whole life so starting her young is so important to me!

“Access to books and the encouragement of the habit of reading: these two things are the first and most necessary steps in education and librarians, teachers and parents all over the country know it. It is our children’s right and it is also our best hope and their best hope for the future.”
