What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is being fully present and aware of your current state of being. It’s a quiet reflection, free of any outside distractions or perspectives. Mindfulness can be practiced anywhere at anytime. Practicing mindfulness can ease anxiety and reduce stress. It can help regulate breathing, assist in more restful sleep, improve focus and more.

What are mindful mornings?

Mindful mornings are simply a practice of starting your morning at a slow pace that promotes mindfulness. This can mean limiting outside distractions such as social media or it can mean getting outside first thing in the morning. Mindful mornings are different for everyone.

In this post I am going to share with you what my ideal mindful morning routine looks like. I want to make it clear that not all of my mornings looks like this. In fact most days they don’t. My mornings may have bits and pieces of the routine I am sharing here, but the truth is I often don’t have time (or make the time) for the full routine. In a perfect world this is what all of my mornings would look like.

We’ve all seen the “That girl” trend going around social media. That girl wakes up every morning at 5 am and does a full work out, only drinks matcha lattes and her white socks never get dirty. She has flawless skin, a perfectly organized home and always seems to have everything figured out. This trend can have some positive and negative effects. While it does give a good example of how to take care of yourself it can also set unrealistic expectations. This can lead to comparison and be damaging to self worth. Use this post a tool to create a mindful morning routine that works for you, but don’t feel like you have to follow it exactly.

Mindful mornings can be as short or as long as you want them to be (or have the time for.) The beautiful part of practicing mindfulness is being in tune with what you need in the moment. Each morning you have the opportunity to follow your intuition and start your day with what you need. Some mornings may start with yoga and tea and other mornings may be a motivational video on youtube (I love this one) and a big cup of coffee.

Mindful mornings start with bedtime

Mindful mornings actually start the night before with a calming night time routine. Ideally this means getting to sleep early enough to get a full 8 hours and no screens for at least an hour before bed. This can also include essential oils, soft lighting, breathwork and more. Your night time routine is going to be catered to your needs just like your morning routine. To make sure you are preparing yourself for your mindful morning routine your night time routine should be slow and calming. Without this you may have trouble sleeping and the stress from the night before can carry over into your morning. With a calm evening you will have more restful sleep and wake up refreshed.

My Ideal Mindful Morning Routine

Meditation

I find that meditation is easiest for me first thing in the morning. Especially if done before I even open my eyes. I take a few moments to mediate and take deep breathes. Sometimes I will mentally list things I’m grateful for or I will focus on a noise like a fan.

Stretch

Then I will stretch and start to loosen up my muscles. I like to move in an intuitive motion and lean into whatever areas of my body feel tight.

Make the bed

I once heard somewhere that as long as you make your bed each day you can’t say you didn’t accomplish anything. I really like that concept. Even if the rest of the day went south at least you accomplished something and have a cozy bed to crawl into. I don’t always make my bed, but I know that when I do my mood is guaranteed to be better than the days that I don’t. I sleep better too!

Hydrate

I like to keep a big glass of water by the bed so that I always have water if I wake up thirsty in the middle of the night. Then when I wake up I can start hydrating before my feet even hit the ground. I like to make sure I set up my Mayu Swirl with fresh water each night so that its ready for me to start sipping on first thing in the morning. If I forget, no worries it only takes a few minute to get proper aeration. I filter my water with my ProOne water filter before filling up my Mayu Swirl so that I know I am getting the best quality water free of toxins. (Use the EWG website to see what it lurking in your water.)

What does the Mayu Swirl do? The Mayu Swirl uses a swirling motion to add oxygen back into the water. We aren’t meant to drink stagnant water. Water in nature is constantly moving through oceans, rivers and streams which removes CO2 and adds in Oxygen. The Mayu Swirl uses the same motions to bring water back to its natural living structure. Mayu Swirl makes water that is good for the body and the soul. Use my code LAVENDER to get $15 off yours. Here is some more information on aeration.

Read

Instead of turning on the news or opening social media right away, I open up a book. Preferably something motivational so that it puts me in the best state of mind for the rest of my day.

Gratitude Journal

I love practicing gratitude first thing in the morning. I find that it really sets you up to have a more peaceful day. If you start your day with gratitude you are more likely to be in the state of mind to find joy through out the rest of your day. Your brain will already be set to look for things that make you happy and you will be less likely to notice minor inconveniences. Did you know that gratitude is one of the highest frequencies? Check out this chart below by The Belief Coach . Here is a guided gratitude journal I like, but you can use any notebook or list them in your head.

Skin Care

My skin care routine changes often, but the one thing that is consistent in my morning skin care routine is hydration. I always moisturize my face in the morning and the evening. My favorite lotion is the Yay For Earth face lotion. I also love using my glow serum on my face after a shower. I’ve shared my recipe for this a few times over on my IG.

Balanced Breakfast

Of course I have to include breakfast in my routine since it is morning after all. For a list of breakfast ideas check out my blog here sharing my favorite breakfasts. Ideally my breakfast would be well rounded and nutrient dense. Some mornings all I have time for is a bagel, but the goal is to make sure it includes lots of fresh fruits and veggies as well as some protein. Here is a cozy breakfast I love.

Dance Break

While cooking breakfast I like to listen to music and dance around the kitchen with my toddler. Getting my body moving first thing in the morning helps wake me up and lift my spirits. Check out my favorite morning playlist.

Coffee

The flavor, smell and routine of coffee is something that brings me so much joy. No morning routine would be complete without it. Some days I make my own and other days I enjoy getting it from Starbucks or a local coffee shop. I really enjoy talking to the baristas and the warm energy inside coffee shops. Of course I like my fancy lattes too.

Earthing

After making my coffee I take it outside (weather permitting) to drink while I get my feet onto the earth. I like to make sure I ground myself each morning by walking barefoot in the grass. In the morning my backyard is so peaceful. There isn’t too much traffic or noise yet and the sounds of the birds chirping and wind in the trees is so therapeutic.

The best part of my mornings

My favorite part of any morning is always the time I get to spend with my daughter. We cuddle, we read books, we dance. Watching her make the most out of every moment is the greatest reminder to slow down.

    1. I can relate so much to this! So many of my mornings are on the go. This post was just as much a reminder for myself to get back to mindful mornings! I’m so glad you found the tips helpful! Remember sometimes not being productive is productive. Relaxation is just as important.

  1. Having a morning routine is essential for a positive and productive day for me. I do most of these things listed (more of a chai tea person than coffee). And I also read my Bible or devotional as well as make sure I drink one cup full of my 36oz water bottle before leaving the day.

    1. Yes! like I said in the post I don’t always make time for my routine, but when I do my day is always more positive! I love a good chai tea too!

  2. I love a good morning routine where it just sets the perfect tone for the day. Great blog post! Full of some really great things to add to my morning routine!
